The Performing Arts Division of the National Federation of the Blind History and Profile Introduction The National Federation of the Blind is a non profit organization that advocates for the rights of blind people across the United States. The Performing Arts Division has been an active part of the organization since 2000. The Division participates and organizes, in part or in hole with, activities that further the entertainment related goals of blind and visually impaired people in the U.S. Through fund raising efforts, the Division is able to finance the many projects and programs that assist the blind in their performing art aspirations. History of the Division The Performing Arts Division was organized in 2000 to address issues concerning the blind in the entertainment field. The Division exists for the purpose of educating the public about the abilities of the blind in the performing arts, providing resources and networking opportunities for those who seek support, and raising media awareness of blind people in all areas of the performing arts through organizing or taking part in performing arts related events and activities. The leadership of the Division consists of blind and visually impaired people who have a professional or academic interest in the entertainment field. The leadership includes, or has included, singers, actors, producers, songwriters, vocal teachers and voiceover specialists. The membership of the Division includes blind and visually impaired people from all age groups, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. The Division holds annual membership meetings during the National Federation of the Blind Annual Convention. These conventions are held in a different city each year and are chosen by the Federation. The majority of the leadership are elected by the members. These leaders are charged with making policy decisions for the Division and to assist the membership in meeting desired goals. A major part of the division structure is the Mary Anne Parks, Performing Arts Division Scholarship program. Through fund razing and donations, the division seeks to assist blind college students in pursuing their performing arts academic goals.
